Delivering Comfort to Children with Cancer

Join Us

Patients and Families

Lucy’s Love Bus pays up to $1000 for any integrative therapy that your child would like to use to supplement his or her traditional cancer treatment. Covered therapies include, but are not limited to: therapeutic massage, acupuncture, acupressure, therapeutic horseback riding, Reiki, Tai Chi, Yoga, Music and Movement, and Craniosacral therapy).

If your child (age 21 and under), or a child in your care is going through cancer treatment, or experiencing late effects of prior cancer treatment, and you are interested in exploring the benefits of integrative therapies, please complete our application.

If you need assistance in identifying practitioners of integrative therapies in your area, our volunteers can help.  Please contact us to be connected with a volunteer.

Practitioners

Lucy’s Love Bus welcomes new practitioners as we build our network of trusted resources throughout New England.  If you are a licensed, certified and insured professional who delivers any of the integrative therapies for which we pay, please contact us for information on how you can get involved.  We are especially interested in hearing from people who have experience working with oncology patients.

Volunteers

Volunteers play an integral role at Lucy’s Love Bus, and there are four areas in which you can contribute to our mission:

  1. Lucy’s Love Bus- Acupuncture on Wheels

This program delivers free acupuncture to physicians, nurses and parents who work closely with children who are fighting cancer. Lucy believed that if doctors would try acupuncture, they would be much more likely to recommend it to their young patients. We are in the process of transforming a 1970 VW Westfalia bus into an acupuncture clinic on wheels to help us deliver free integrative therapies to physicians, nurses and parents at hospitals, and to medical students at medical schools. We are seeking experienced, licensed and insured acupuncturists to donate their services for these visits. (This is the only time we ask our partnering practitioners to donate their services. All practitioners are paid when they work with our pediatric oncology patients.)

  2. Lucy’s Teen Leaders

Lucy’s Teen Leaders is a program that works with groups of motivated young adults who are committed to helping raise money to deliver comfort to children with cancer.  Lucy’s Teen Leaders, along with an adult volunteer, work in groups to create and implement fundraising efforts.

Examples of the work our Teen Leaders:
    • A group of 33 teens, members of a field hockey team in western Massachusetts, together with their coach, raised over $8,000 for Lucy’s Love Bus, in honor of their friend who is fighting Leukemia and is receiving free integrative therapies through Lucy’s Love Bus. This incredible group of teens has made it possible for us to support eight more children with cancer!
    • In 2010, Lucy’s Teen Leaders sold 1,200 butterflies for our annual Fly-Away Festival, and helped raise over $40,000 for children with cancer at the first Fly-Away Festival.
  3. Cancer parents

We are always seeking parents who have helped their own children navigate the terrifying journey through cancer. Whether you are the parent of a cancer survivor, or a parent who has lost a child to the disease, you are someone who can help our families in a unique and meaningful way.  Please contact us if you would like to offer resources and emotional support to a family who is coping with cancer.

  4. Fly-Away Event

The Fly-Away event is our major annual fundraiser. Originally conceived by a group of Lucy’s friends and her little sister, this event is a festive, yet deeply moving celebration that honors those we love who we have lost to cancer.

The 2011 Fly-Away is scheduled for September 17th with a rain date of September 18th and will be held at Woodsom Farm in Amesbury, MA. The festival includes live music, food from local restaurants, pony rides, arts and crafts for children, face painting and lots more. The highlight of the event is the release of thousands of live Monarch butterflies that are sold by Teen Leaders throughout the year in preparation for the event.

Please contact us if you would like to volunteer!
